Who runs the mines of Senegal and Mali in 2026? The official answer exists, but it sits inside reports several hundred pages long. In Senegal, the 2024 EITI report, published in December 2025, lists 26 mining and quarrying companies, with what each one produced. In Mali, the Ministry of Mines publishes the output of the large gold mines every half year.

Here is the list, company by company: who produces what, where, and which projects are coming.

The table gives the output the companies themselves declared for 2024, in the report of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).

Cement weighs as much as gold in the country's quarries: SOCOCIM produced 3.2 million tonnes of cement at Bargny, Dangote Industries Sénégal 1.5 million tonnes at Pout, and Ciments du Sahel extracted 5 million tonnes of limestone. The basalt quarries of Diack, Thiès and Bandia are run by COGECA, Gécamines, Talix Mines, CSE Granulats and China Road and Bridge Corporation.

The official list is completed by two state companies, MIFERSO for the Falémé iron ore and SOMISEN, the Senegal mining company; Boto SA and G-Phos, holders of a mining licence; AGEM Sénégal Exploration, Sabodala Mining Company and Barrick Gold Senegal, holders of exploration permits; and Boya SA, for gold and copper.

Senegal's gold mines are all in Kédougou

Together, Sabodala and Mako produced about 353,000 ounces in 2024, close to 11 tonnes of gold. Both mines are in the Kédougou region, in the south east of the country, on the Birimian belt that continues into Mali. In 2024, PMC shipped its gold to Australia, SGO to Dubai and Switzerland.

Three new mines are changing the map:

  • Boto (Managem). The Moroccan group poured first gold in September 2025 at Madina Baffé, in the Kédougou region, and inaugurated the mine in November. It announces a 350 million euro investment, average output of 160,000 ounces a year over the first three years and 1.8 million ounces of reserves.
  • Diamba Sud (Fortuna Mining). Environmental impact study approved; in July 2026, Fortuna's chief executive expected the final permit "within weeks" and was already ordering key equipment. Close to 400 million dollars of investment, up to 230,000 ounces a year at peak, first gold targeted for the second quarter of 2028.
  • Douta (Thor Explorations). Environmental impact study approved in January 2026, construction planned for 2026, open pit mining from the end of 2027.

Every mine under construction first buys diesel for earthworks, then for its fleet and its power plant. The machine by machine calculation is in our article on diesel consumption in mining.

Phosphate, zircon and cement: western Senegal

Industries Chimiques du Sénégal, controlled by the Indorama group since 2014, mines the Taïba phosphate and processes it at Tobène. According to the Directorate General of Mines, quoted by the EITI, the Taïba deposit had about 50 million tonnes of reserves for output of about 2 million tonnes a year. In 2024, India bought most of the phosphoric acid ICS exported.

Grande Côte Opérations, an Eramet subsidiary, dredges the mineral sands of the northern coast at Diogo for ilmenite and zircon. Further north east, SOMIVA mines the phosphate of the Matam region.

The cement makers export too: in 2024, Dangote and SOCOCIM each sent about 100,000 tonnes of cement to Mali, by road.

What the mines buy in Senegal

In 2024, mining companies declared 747.8 billion CFA francs of purchases from local suppliers. Sabodala Gold Operations leads by far with 273.4 billion, ahead of SOCOCIM (116.0), ICS (90.4), Ciments du Sahel (71.4) and Boto SA (64.3), then under construction. Local content is monitored by a national committee, which publishes the extractive companies' tenders on a platform: 112 tenders between April and December 2024, 40 of them reserved for Senegalese companies.

The list of mines in Mali

In Mali, the large industrial mines produced 23.5 tonnes of gold in the first half of 2026, about 30 percent more than a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Mines. The target for the year is 43.2 tonnes, after a fall to 42.2 tonnes in 2025, from 54.8 tonnes in 2024.

Loulo-Gounkoto was at the heart of a long dispute: the mine, halted in early 2025, was placed under provisional administration in June 2025; Barrick and the state reached an agreement in November and Barrick regained control in December. Its restart explains most of the 2026 increase.

Lithium is the novelty: with Goulamina and Bougouni, Mali has become an exporter of lithium concentrate. Bougouni's first shipment left through the Ivorian port of San Pedro, a sign that the mines of southern Mali look to Abidjan and San Pedro as much as to Dakar.

Fekola, Loulo-Gounkoto and Sadiola are in the Kayes region, in the west, near the Senegalese border: their fuel and spare parts often arrive through Senegal's corridors. Since September 2025, the fuel blockade imposed by armed groups has made supply the first risk for these mines; we analyse it in shipping to Mali under blockade.
