In West Africa the 45,000 litre road tanker has become the unit of measure for fuel: convoys are counted in tankers, depots in tankers loaded per day, shortages in tankers missing. Yet few buyers know what such a truck may legally carry, what it costs, or how to hire one.

What 45,000 litres means

The figure is the capacity of the tank, usually a three axle semi-trailer pulled by a tractor unit. The tank is divided into several compartments, often five or six, so one trip can carry several products, or serve several customers without mixing batches.

Each compartment is closed and sealed at loading. The seal numbers, copied onto the delivery note, are the first protection against product being drawn off on the way.

How much a full tanker weighs

This is the question nobody asks, and it changes everything. A litre of diesel weighs 0.820 to 0.845 kg (EN 590 standard), a litre of petrol 0.720 to 0.775 kg (EN 228 standard). So:

LoadWeight of product
45,000 litres of dieselabout 36.9 to 38 tonnes
45,000 litres of petrolabout 32.4 to 34.9 tonnes

Add the unladen weight of the tractor and trailer, shown on the registration document. UEMOA regulation 14/2005/CM/UEMOA, which applies in Senegal and Mali among others, limits axle load to 11.5 tonnes per axle and the gross weight of the heaviest combinations to 51 tonnes.

For a combination weighing 16 tonnes empty, petrol stays under the limit, at around 48 to 51 tonnes. Diesel exceeds it: 45,000 litres of diesel give a combination of 53 to 54 tonnes. A 45,000 litre tanker full of diesel is therefore legal only if its unladen weight is low enough, which depends on the tractor, the tank and the number of axles. Otherwise it must be loaded below capacity.

That is one reason aluminium tanks, lighter than steel, are in demand: every tonne saved on unladen weight is a tonne more product, legally.

What a tanker costs

There is no official price. As an indication, listings for new three axle tank semi-trailers of 42,000 to 45,000 litres from Chinese manufacturers on specialist marketplaces ranged on 1 October 2026 from about 13,000 to 37,000 dollars, depending on material (steel or aluminium), compartments and equipment. Those prices exclude the tractor, sea freight, import duty and local compliance.

For a real price you need a quotation, a technical sheet (material, thickness, compartments, axles, suspension, safety equipment) and a check of the stated unladen weight, since that is what decides the legal payload.

Buy or hire

Buying makes sense for a large, regular consumer that will keep the truck busy all year: a mine, a power plant, a distributor. It then also needs a driver trained for dangerous goods, maintenance, insurance, and an organisation that stops the truck from returning empty.

Hiring or subcontracting makes sense in almost every other case. Companies offer fuel tanker hire in Dakar and across the region. In practice fuel haulage is mostly priced per trip or per volume delivered, depending on distance, corridor and the level of security required. On the roads to Mali, military escort is now the rule, and its cost rose from 600,000 to 800,000 CFA francs per convoy in 2026.

What to check before handing over your fuel

  • The tank: compliant, inspected, suited to the product, compartments sealed.
  • The driver: trained for dangerous goods.
  • The papers: registration, insurance, transport documents, and the unladen weight needed to calculate the legal load.
  • Tracking: a GPS tracked truck, with an alert on abnormal stops.
  • Delivery: seals checked, samples taken, tank dipped before and after.

Our reading

The 45,000 litre tanker is a good tool, badly used. Filled to the brim with diesel it is often overloaded, which wears out roads, invites fines and distorts competition between hauliers. A transport quote that assumes 45,000 litres of diesel per truck without stating the combination's unladen weight needs clarifying.

Frequently asked questions

How many tonnes is a 45,000 litre tanker?

The product alone weighs about 37 to 38 tonnes for diesel and 32 to 35 tonnes for petrol. Add the unladen weight of the tractor and trailer, shown on the registration document.

How much does a 45,000 litre fuel tanker cost?

There is no official price. On 1 October 2026, new tank semi-trailers from Chinese manufacturers were listed at about 13,000 to 37,000 dollars, excluding tractor, freight and duty.

Is a 45,000 litre diesel tanker overloaded?

Often, if the combination weighs more than 13 to 14 tonnes empty: 45,000 litres of diesel weigh about 37 to 38 tonnes, and the UEMOA gross weight limit is 51 tonnes.

How many compartments does a 45,000 litre tanker have?

Usually five or six, which allows several products or several customers in one trip.

What we do
