"Bringing fuel from Senegal into Guinea would be complicated." It is the most common objection when talking fuel supply with Guinean mines, and it is fair: by road, the trip is long and hard. But the road is not the only option. For a bauxite mine near Boké or a gold mine in Upper Guinea, there are three ways to receive diesel, each with its strengths and limits.

The starting point: a fragile local market

Guinea imports its fuel and stores it in a handful of depots. Société guinéenne des pétroles runs the depots in Conakry, Kankan, N'Zérékoré and Mamou. In December 2023, the explosion of Conakry's main fuel depot, in Kaloum, killed 24 people, injured more than 450 and paralysed the country's supply for weeks.

The strains are not over. In March 2026, a sudden shortage hit Kankan, then Kindia and Conakry. A litre sold for 20,000 Guinean francs and more on the black market in Conakry, and up to 25,000 in Kindia, against an official price of 12,000 francs, unchanged since June 2022. For a mine running trucks and generators day and night, every local shortage is a potential production stop.

Option 1: buy on the local market

The simplest solution for small volumes: a Guinean distributor delivers by tanker truck from a depot.

Strengths: no import to organise, deliveries as needed.

Limits: you depend on the national depots and their shortages. When the market runs short, distributors serve their own stations and largest customers first, and quality becomes harder to control.

Option 2: receive by sea at Conakry or Kamsar

For large consumers, the cargo can be delivered by sea directly to a Guinean port, from 2,000 tonnes per delivery, with independent inspection at loading.

For mines in the Boké region, close to the port of Kamsar, this is the most natural solution. Some mines already run their whole logistics by sea: at Bel Air, bauxite is trucked about fifteen kilometres to the barges, then transhipped onto large vessels some 32 km offshore.

For mines in Upper Guinea, around Siguiri, Dinguiraye or Kouroussa, the cargo arrives in Conakry, then goes up by tanker truck. The trip is long, but it no longer depends on the national depots' stocks.

What to plan: receiving and storage capacity, an import authorisation, and financing for a lot of several thousand tonnes. This is why this option suits mines whose monthly consumption justifies a cargo.

Option 3: the road from Senegal

The Dakar Conakry road is about 1,130 km, through Tambacounda, the Boundou Fourdou border post, Koundara and Labé, across the Fouta Djallon highlands. Guinea has been back in ECOWAS since 28 January 2026, which eases transit. But for bulk fuel, distance, terrain and cost per litre make it a last resort, not a regular supply.

As for neighbouring Mali, it has itself been under a fuel blockade since 2025: it is not a source for Guinea.

How to choose

Your situationBest-suited option
Small volumes, site near ConakryLocal market, with a second supplier
Large volumes, mine in the Boké regionVessel to Kamsar or Conakry
Large volumes, mine in Upper GuineaVessel to Conakry, then tanker truck
One-off shortage, urgent needRoad, as a last resort

In every case, three rules: an on-site tank sized for several weeks, an analysis certificate for every batch, and sealed tanker trucks all the way to delivery.

Frequently asked questions

How do you supply fuel to a mine in Guinea?

From the local market for small volumes, by sea to Conakry or Kamsar for large volumes, from 2,000 tonnes per delivery, and by road from Senegal as a last resort.

Are there fuel shortages in Guinea?

Yes. In March 2026, shortages hit Kankan, Kindia and Conakry, with black-market prices of 20,000 Guinean francs a litre and more. In December 2023, the Kaloum depot explosion had paralysed the country.

What is the official fuel price in Guinea?

12,000 Guinean francs a litre for diesel and petrol at the pump, since 1 June 2022.

Can fuel be trucked to Guinea from Senegal?

Yes, along the Dakar Conakry corridor, about 1,130 km. But distance and the Fouta Djallon terrain make it a last resort for bulk fuel.

What we do

GraceRoad delivers diesel by sea directly to the port in Guinea, at Conakry or Kamsar, from 2,000 tonnes, with independent inspection at loading and an analysis certificate for every batch. We then arrange tanker trucks to the site when needed. The price is set for each order, on the international quotation for the product plus a stated premium.
